A tool to create type

Typographical Toolkit

This perforated booklet I made, serves as a typographical toolkit. It is a means of creating type on a wall. Each booklet stands for one letter and each letter consists of two parts. For this assignment I was inspired by the signage that I saw in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The vast majority of these signs had beautiful stencil letters painted on them, which allowed me to really see type as letterelements. By looking into the basic shapes or building blocks of a letter, I discovered that I only needed 11 left halves and 22 right halves to create all 26 letters. My typographical toolkit works like a block calendar. The user may tear off pieces of paper until the correct letterform is found, coming accross many interesting possibilities and variations on the way.
